An arbitrary example of the currently popular way of talking about the Internet, from the Guardian: an opinion piece titled "Take it from the insiders: Silicon Valley is eating your soul", where "Silicon Valley" is roughly equal to social media, and social media are roughly equal to Facebook.

Literary scholars might call this metonymy.
