Here is an interesting video with a demonstration of some of the latest web platform features: most prominently service workers and web assembly.

This is the first time I see someone demo a prototype single-page web app developed in a language that compiles to web assembly. The presenter chose C# for his demonstration, which looks at the same time menacing (because the developer experience of building the app is actually not that bad) and very wrong (because dot net and c-sharp, ugh). And from what I heard about web assembly before (how it’s not supposed to be able to interact with the DOM) I did not think what he was showing was going to be possible.

Judging by the demo, it’s not unimaginable that within a decade client-side web apps will be written in something other than javascript.
