I think I heard in one of the books (not sure which, though I suspect it was in Sagan’s Cosmos) of a philosopher who posited that the best way to live one’s life is to stay unnoticed. This was the general gist of the phrase; I am not sure of the exact words, nor of the philosopher whom it was attributed to (although I think it was Pascal).

Anyhow, Google books respond eagerly to the phrase "pass through life unnoticed" tracing it back to the Romans.
