1) Латинский signum --> старофранцузский signal, seignal, seignau --> в английский язык с 14-го века - signal (Чосер: "Tho saugh I... alle the mervelouse signals Of the goddys celestials"), но в основном используется с конца 16-го века (Шекспир: "In signall of my loue to thee").

2) Латинский signum --> французский signe --> в английский язык с 13-го века - sign

Понять бы, зачем англичанам понадобилось два перекрывающихся по значению слова...
