Subjunctive

Тоже из New England Primer. Катехизис:

Quest. What hath God done for you?
Ans. God hath made me, he keepeth me, and he can save me.
Q. What is GOD?
A. God is a Spirit of himself and for himself.
Q. How many Gods be there?
A. There be but One GOD in three Persons, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost.

Это одна из редакций (в других редакциях третий вопрос звучит иначе, напр. Are there more Gods than one). Но вот в этой редакции — почему subjunctive? Чем это отличает третий вопрос от второго?

Ну и заодно почему, когда писатели имитируют речь моряков, они суют этот subjunctive в моряцкую речь куда ни попадя?
