Was shocked to learn that the defect in making the sound /r/ (exemplified by the word wabbit, or by the Pontius Pilate scene from Life of Brian) is called rhotacism. I was used to seeing this word in historico-phonetic contexts, where it means exactly the opposite: transformation of sounds into an /r/.

I wonder what the non-learned folk call this speech impediment.
