Watched Ben Shapiro on The Rubin Report, and thought I liked the guy. A quick thinker, a rather radical proponent of free speech, a believer in intellectual honesty and consistency; what's not to like (apart from his orthodox Judaism)?

Then I started listening to one of his books, and it was as if it were written by a completely different person, shallow and given to petty personal attacks (how Michael Moore is fat, or Obama is unprincipled and stupid, or how the occupy Wall Street activists are Neanderthals, and so on). Also, I think I had heard him say on Rubin’s show that conservatives are individualists, so it struck me as inconsistent to hear him (a conservative) staunchly defend patriotism, which certainly is not individualistic.

It keeps surprising me how many people are not satisfied with just living a life — or, better yet, living a pleasurable life — but want to live a "good" (as in morally good) life.
