A cheap old trick, no less yucky than Nigerian spam, is to prompt the user to perform the desired action by showing him messages about fake users who have done so.

Here, for example, is a site of someone who pretends to be a SEO expert with a simple script that cycles through a list of fake email fragments and shows notifications that some user has registered for his webinar (top left corner of the screenshot). It is so stupid it's insulting.
