How
many
times
have I been bitten
by the fact that JavaScript can add strings to numbers!

Honestly, every time this happens I wish for a type-safe language!

I started playing this video (of a panel discussion at a conference in Slovakia) without prior knowledge that it is (partially) interpreted, and listened for several minutes to several random bits of it.

Not that the interpreters are doing a spectacularly bad job (although they are obviously translating into a foreign language, and I heard one of them struggle with the word amygdala) — it's probably what people would normally hear coming from their headphones — but still, it is a torture similar to the torture of listening to someone speak in a poorly known foreign language. Why people would subject themselves to such torture by attending conferences that require translation is beyond me.
