One of my favorite popularizers of linguistics, John McWhorter, in his Words on the Move, discusses, among other things, various manifestations of what he calls the easing function of the language — namely, what people use to sound more pleasant or to ease tension. One of his examples is very close to what we have with our diminutives in Russia (стаканчик, рыбка, котлетка, чашечка, and so on). Which diminutives are widely condemned by our high-brow literary public as servile.
