I have noticed that graduate students are increasingly skeptical when I advise them that they do not have to write obscurely to make a positive impact on professional audiences. Some go so far as to claim that a certain amount of obfuscation is a prerequisite for professional success. When students write ponderously and evasively, it is often not because they could not do otherwise but because they are convinced that such writing is what their professors want.
