If you can remember and then repeat for a professor the plot of a novel, the name of the author, the date of the publication, it is true that you have a number of facts at your disposal, but they are worthless. They are not important, they are not where the action is. They are not the reason that one reads novels in the first place. At least not the reason that I do. That's why I don't give exams, I haven't given exams in decades.
