I was amused to see several times on social media (reddit and hacker news) the word "pedantic" used disapprovingly. I think I have even heard John McWhorter say it in the same, vaguely negative, sense ("I am not being pedantic" or something to that effect). Not sure what exactly those who use this word thus have in mind or what alternative way of thinking and speaking they prefer.
