Lionel Shriver's essay in this Saturday's issue of the Times:

It's amusing to read (not for the first time of course) an analysis of the Democrats' tactics regarding immigration that reads the same as a common complaint by Russian democrats about Putin's (or Luzhkov's, or Sobyanin's) attitude towards importing the Tajiks:

The Democratic Party’s long-term game plan has been clear for decades. Tony Blair assumed that the multitude of migrants he welcomed to Britain would all vote Labour. In kind, Democrats have long argued for de facto open borders and an amnesty for illegal immigrants (or, in Joe Biden’s euphemism, a “pathway to citizenship”) on the understanding that all these Democrats-to-be will put their party permanently in power.
