
Those bigoted purse-gripping whites...
I remember from a while back a discussion seen either on Twitter or in someone's blog about how women, terrified of rape, are intimidated if a man happens to walk behind them on a street; and how a responsible and empathetic man would make their presence known and maybe slow down their pace or something. I don't remember the details; I just remember the vague wtf feeling.
Being scared of an unfamiliar man in one's vicinity was considered then to be a natural reaction (from which an argument followed of how these poor creatures must be oppressed by men that they psychologically suffer so).
But of course gripping one's purse while walking past an unfamiliar black man is an act of racism...
