Oh, interesting. Google's Firebase has a pretty generous free plan, which means that theoretically, it is possible to build a static site with a commenting system without relying on Disqus or on the somewhat cumbersome solutions that treat comments as pull requests.

There's even a video by Firebase about this use case:
