In order to graduate [from] US university you have to take ... English 101 and English 102; you have to take a public speaking course, an ethics course, sociology, psychology, and Western Civ, those are mandatory, you have to learn those to graduate.

Don’t know how much truth there is to that; but it sure resembles parts of the Russian system, where you have to take a number of mandatory general subjects in order to graduate. Because they are mandatory and have nothing to do with students’ interests, and because they typically attract the worst of the respective faculty, they are usually crap. Sometimes we thought we were the only ones having to endure this insanity.
