John Oliver, in the last episode of Last Week Tonight (on impeachment), quotes a tweet by Ellen Weintraub, drawing attention to the words "when foreign governments seek to influence American politics, it is always to advance their own interests, not America’s".

All the times I’ve heard this argument I’ve never heard anyone say: of course it’s always to advance their own interests; that’s bloody obvious; but why should their interests and America’s interests be the opposite of one another? Why can’t they happen to coincide?
