First, "глубоко эгоистическим желанием"? And second, is "никогда бы не додумался" the same as "никогда бы не подумал"; doesn't не додумался mean that you spend some time thinking of a solution to a problem, but fail to find one (whereas the original rather has the sense of "it would have not even occurred to...").
