A colleague of mine recently showed me web traffic statistics for dating sites, among which the first place was held by Badoo.com.

I was amazed. I have heard about Badoo, but very rarely and not in the "organic" context like "hey, there's this dating site", but in a professional one, when someone would say they know a friend who is working at Badoo. To see it was receiving more page visits than OkCupid or even Tinder, which, to my ear, are far more recognizable brands, was eye-opening.

So I was amused by some of the Glassdoor reviews of Badoo as an employer:

"Badoo is a heavily Russian dominated company, with that comes rampant sexism, racism and bigotry. Be prepared to work in a micro-managed task driven culture where there is little regard for individual creativity or resourcefulness."

Pros

Competitive Salaries, Large frequent bonuses, Free food, Massages, Excellent parties

Cons

Badoo is a heavily Russian dominated company, with that comes rampant sexism, racism and bigotry. Be prepared to work in a micro-managed task driven culture where there is little regard for individual creativity or resourcefulness.
At the top of Badoo is Andrey Andreev, who trusts no one and involves himself in almost every decision in the company. Andrey changes his mind on an hourly basis, this might result in weeks of work being dismissed out of hand or several parts of the company working in competing directions. It is not uncommon for other senior Russian management to march around the office shouting and swearing about tasks taking too long or to have been released with defects.
The engineering board doesn’t get much better, overall the members are technically incompetent and lack the most basic of management skills, with most of their energy going into backstabbing and empire building. Badoo only has one solution to try and fix the rotten culture and that is to throw money at its employees. If you can be bought this is the place for you. The salaries are very competitive and you will be showered with monthly, quarterly and adhoc manager bonuses, but be prepared to join in the backstabbing and power plays to get those consistently.
Finally we come to the culture of disappearance, as a Badoo employee you are never safe from being summarily fired and disappeared from the company with little to no regard for process or review. You have to remember that as a Badoo employee you are seen as just another resource that can be squeezed as hard as possible and when you are no longer useful or Andrey gets bored of you questioning his directives, you are thrown away.
Just about as far away from a people first culture as you can get.

I worked at Badoo full-time (More than a year)

Pros

You will be showered with money constantly: best tools money can buy, devices, conferences...
You will have food 24/7, booze every Friday and massive parties. It's great if you never grow up.
If you are not under the "eye of sauron" you'll manage to have a happy life... Until you do.

Cons

The most toxic environment for your mental well-being I have ever seen.
Nobody cares about you
If you don't speak Russian, you are in the apartheid, and you'll be left out.
Additionally, if you are not an engineer in a revenue generating position, you are second class. Maybe third.
High turnover. Try to ask how long your interviewers have been around. Ask why people leave. This, together with their difficulty to hire, will make incompetent or not fit for teamwork people stick around and never be fired.
Big pressure spikes for no good reason. You'll be asked to work during weekends for things that could have been planned but nobody bothered. You will be burnt and overworked in the name of "hard working", but try to see any director or VP staying later than 6.
Promotions are arbitrary and a way of trying to make people not leave, not praising their abilities. You may be the best, but won't progress until you threaten to leave.
The eye of sauron will come. Suddenly, people from the self proclaimed "power room" (scary, but it's just the directors) will sniff, tear apart and micro manage every single aspect of what you do. You will be discredited, shout at and made feel worthless in front of everyone else.
You will be part of bizarre events, drunk people surrounded by half naked women and children, where they will spend big money on getting you distracted from all the cons (perhaps forget them even after that much booze)
Misogyny, racism and bigotry will be part of your every day. And when you try to raise it, nobody will see the problem with it.
One of the most ridiculous parenthood allowances in the London tech industry (the exact bare minimum)

"Task driven culture". "Rampant sexism, racism and bigotry". "Little regard for individual creativity". It's curious to see how people from abroad view companies originating from Russia.
